About

The Sydney Globalist is an undergraduate international affairs magazine, published bi-annually by students at the University of Sydney, Australia. It is produced with the support of the Department of Government & International Relations, the Faculty of Economics & Business and the University of Sydney Union.

An Introduction to Global21

Global21, formerly known as The Globalist Foundation, is a network of student-run international-affairs magazines at premier universities around the globe. Founded at Yale University in 2005, Global21 seeks to connect high-achieving students around the world in ways that will remain with them as they become tomorrow’s leaders in business, the non-profit sector, and government. By targeting select university students, we hope to create a practical tool for dialogue that will bear tangible results in the form of greater international cooperation and understanding in the future. Since our founding last year, we have now established nine chapters at Yale University, Peking University, University of Cambridge, University of Sydney, University of Toronto, University of Cape Town, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, St. Stephen’s University in New Delhi, Bogazici University in Istanbul, and Sciences Po of Paris.

The Mission of The Sydney Globalist

The Sydney Globalist has no political affiliation and hopes to provide as pluralistic approach as possible. Articles will be selected and published on the basis of quality alone. The magazine is intended as a forum for undergraduate students to discuss international affairs at an intellectual and meaningful level. It is distributed to governments, academics, think-tanks and non-government organisations.

We hope that our contributors choose to write articles on issues of great personal interest, and that they attack these issues from a thought-provoking angle, conduct original research and provide strong analysis. In short, we aim to publish quality articles that are worth reading in themselves and not only because they are written by students.

The Style of The Sydney Globalist

In terms of style, The Sydney Globalist can be considered something of a hybrid. It lies on a spectrum between strictly academic publications (such as international relations journals) and more journalistic writing (such as in The Economist). It most closely resembles publications like The Diplomat (http://www.the-diplomat.com) or Foreign Policy (www.foreignpolicy.com/) or even a briefer version of Foreign Affairs (http://www.foreignaffairs.org/). The overall aim is strike a balance between in-depth and rigorous analysis and accessibility. We want to avoid clichés, water-downed language and oversimplification of complex issues (as is sometimes the problem with journalistic writing) as well as incomprehensible and unengaged writing (as is sometimes the problem with academic writing).

No formal referencing is required. Please note that word limits must be strictly adhered to. Article titles must be no more than a few words in length.
